Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) [India], August 5 (ANI): A 100-year-old house collapsed in Gwalior on Tuesday following continuous heavy rainfall in the region. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, officials confirmed.
Satyendra Singh, Zonal Officer of the Municipal Corporation of Gwalior, said the house, which had been locked and unoccupied for 45 years, succumbed to structural weakness exacerbated by rainwater accumulation on its roof. “There are no casualties. This was a 100-year-old house. For the last 45 years, it had been locked. As water settled on the roof, the front portion of the house collapsed,” he told ANI.
Singh added that the structure was built using mud and stone, making it highly vulnerable to sustained rainfall. A notice had previously been issued to the owners under standard regulations concerning dilapidated buildings.
While there is no immediate threat to nearby houses, authorities have taken precautionary measures. “Its debris could pose a risk to adjacent structures. For safety reasons, the premises have been sealed with the assistance of local police,” Singh stated.
The incident comes amid widespread heavy rains affecting several parts of Madhya Pradesh. Earlier on August 2, the Indian Army continued to assist in flood relief operations across the rain-hit regions of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab.
In Madhya Pradesh, Army columns deployed in Guna and Shivpuri districts were withdrawn on Saturday after the situation stabilized. However, relief operations are still active in the Ashoknagar-Gwalior belt, where Army units are assessing the Isagarh and Sihora areas for potential intervention needs.
In neighboring Rajasthan, an Army column remains on standby in Dholpur, ready to respond if conditions worsen. Additionally, a team has been dispatched to Sriganganagar at the request of the Deputy Commissioner, to help manage waterlogging caused by flood-like conditions. The civil administration has sought five pumping sets and two kilometers of hosepipe to alleviate the situation.
So far, security forces have rescued over 105 civilians and provided medical assistance to more than 300 people across the affected states. (ANI)
