New Delhi, May 13: Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways, and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated two state-of-the-art design facilities of Renesas Electronics India Private Limited in Noida and Bengaluru on Tuesday. According to an official release from the Ministry of Electronics and IT, these facilities mark a significant milestone as they will be the first in India to work on cutting-edge 3-nanometer chip design, positioning India as a key player in global semiconductor innovation.
“Designing at 3nm is truly next-generation. We’ve done 7nm and 5nm earlier, but this marks a new frontier,” Vaishnaw stated. He also emphasized that this is the first time that 3nm chips will be designed in India.
The Minister outlined India’s comprehensive semiconductor strategy, which covers design, fabrication, ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging), equipment, chemicals, and gas supply chains. He noted the industry confidence at global forums such as Davos and mentioned major investments from companies like Applied Materials and Lam Research.
Vaishnaw highlighted that the opening of the Semiconductor Design Centre in Uttar Pradesh is a crucial step towards building a pan-India ecosystem that leverages the country’s talent. To support this growth, the government has been encouraging the establishment of semiconductor design centers across India.
To enhance practical skills in hardware, the government has introduced a new semiconductor learning kit for engineering students. More than 270 academic institutions that have received advanced EDA (Electronics, Design, Automation) software tools under the India Semiconductor Mission will also receive these hands-on hardware kits. “This integration of software and hardware learning will create truly industry-ready engineers,” Vaishnaw added.
Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for prioritizing semiconductors as a strategic focus under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, Vaishnaw noted that in just three years, India’s semiconductor industry has transformed from a nascent stage to an emerging global hub. With rising demand for semiconductors in electronic products such as smartphones, laptops, medical equipment, and automobiles, the industry’s growth is timely and critical.
Hidetoshi Shibata, CEO and MD of Renesas Electronics, emphasized that India is a strategic cornerstone for the company, with increasing contributions to embedded systems, software, and system innovation. He stated that Renesas is committed to expanding end-to-end semiconductor capabilities in India, from architecture to testing, while also supporting over 250 academic institutions and startups through initiatives like ISM and PLI.
Renesas, a global leader in embedded semiconductor solutions, is dedicated to making life easier through technological innovation.
