Shillong (Meghalaya), June 11 (ANI): A local court has remanded all five key accused, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, to eight days of police custody in connection with the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, police confirmed on Wednesday.
Superintendent of Police (City), East Khasi Hills, and SIT chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor said that the accused were produced before the District Court, which approved their remand for continued investigation. Following the court proceedings, the accused were taken back to Shillong Sadar Police Station.
Those remanded include Sonam Raghuvanshi, wife of the victim, along with Raj Singh Kushwaha, Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand.
Raja Raghuvanshi was found dead in a gorge near Sohra, close to Cherrapunji, on June 2. He had been on his honeymoon with Sonam in Meghalaya in May 2025 when both were reported missing. Days later, Sonam was located near a roadside dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway, and was subsequently arrested along with the others.
In a shocking revelation earlier in the day, Govind, Sonam’s brother, publicly stated he was “100% sure” of her involvement in Raja’s murder. Speaking at a press conference, he disowned his sister and called for the severest punishment if she is found guilty.
“I’ve apologised to Raja’s family. They lost their son, and I will do everything to make amends. If Sonam is guilty, she should be hanged,” Govind said, adding that his sister’s ties to Raj Kushwaha date back years, though she referred to him as a brother.
Govind further claimed that there had been no contact with Sonam since her arrest and that the family has cut all ties with her.
Raja’s sister-in-law, Kiran Raghuvanshi, also voiced strong condemnation of Sonam, revealing that she used two mobile phones, one allegedly for personal use and the other for work, and was often seen messaging frequently during the trip. “We lost someone we dearly loved. We don’t need apologies. She should be hanged at the earliest,” Kiran said.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that while initial evidence strongly indicates Sonam’s involvement, a thorough interrogation of all accused is underway to piece together a complete picture.
“There’s enough evidence pointing to her role. But we must confirm details through interrogation to tie up all loose ends,” SP Syiem stated.
The investigation is ongoing and is being closely monitored as the case continues to send shockwaves across the region. (ANI)
