New Delhi [India], May 27 (ANI): At least 88 illegal Bangladeshi migrants were traced and detained by South West district police teams in Delhi during a 10-day long verification drive targeting illegal migrants, officials said on Tuesday. Bangladeshi identity documents were recovered from these individuals during the operation.
Following completion of all codal formalities, the deportation process has been initiated with assistance from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), New Delhi, the Delhi Police added.
The drive was launched to address growing concerns regarding unauthorized migrants, including Bangladeshi nationals, residing illegally within the jurisdiction of South West Delhi. Multiple police teams were deployed to conduct thorough checks, particularly in vulnerable localities, and they used secret informers to gather intelligence on illegal residents.
Surendra Chaudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West), stated, “Since last year, we have been actively taking action against illegal migrants. In the past 10 days alone, 88 illegal Bangladeshi migrants have been detained, and we are deporting them with the help of FRRO. Many came through different border points and were found possessing Aadhaar cards, which we are currently investigating.”
Since December 26, 2024, a total of 142 illegal Bangladeshi migrants have been detained by the South West district police.
During the drive, police approached suspected individuals and requested valid identification documents. Those unable to provide legitimate Indian documents admitted to being illegal Bangladeshi migrants who entered India unlawfully. Photocopies of Bangladeshi national ID cards were seized as evidence.
The detained individuals underwent verification and legal processes, with deportation procedures initiated through FRRO, New Delhi.
Delhi Police credited teams from Sarojini Nagar, Kishangarh, SJ Enclave, VK South, Kapashera, Sagarpur, AATS, Delhi Cantt., Palam Village, and VK North for their commendable efforts in tracking and detaining these migrants.
The operation forms part of a proactive campaign led by the Ministry of Home Affairs to identify, trace, and deport illegal migrants from the national capital. (ANI)
