SHIVAMOGGA, Feb. 24 (ANI) — The Karnataka government has announced Rs 15 lakh compensation for the family of a 15-year-old student who was murdered following a dispute linked to a local cricket match, authorities said Tuesday.
According to District Superintendent of Police Nikhil B, the incident occurred Monday night and is believed to have stemmed from an argument that took place during a cricket match two days earlier. Police suspect that the earlier altercation escalated into violence, ultimately resulting in the teenager’s killing.
Seven individuals have been detained in connection with the case, and officials said the accused will undergo drug testing as part of the investigation. A Special Investigation Team has been formed to conduct a comprehensive probe, and authorities are also examining possible links to drug activity in the area.
The government announced that Rs 10 lakh will be provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and Rs 5 lakh from the Education Department as compensation to the victim’s family. Officials also confirmed that compensation will be extended to another individual, identified as Girish, who was injured in the incident.
A case has been registered under the Atrocities Act, and authorities said awareness campaigns targeting drug abuse will be intensified in the region. Additional police personnel will be deployed, and steps are underway to establish a sub-police station to strengthen security for residents.
Tensions rose in the locality after the victim’s body was returned following the post-mortem examination, prompting protests by residents demanding swift justice, compensation, and improved policing. Local political leaders, including Shivamogga MLA SN Channabasappa and former minister KS Eshwarappa, visited the area and raised concerns about alleged police inaction and potential drug involvement in the crime.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
