Tel Aviv [Israel], February 28 (ANI): Israel launched a preemptive missile attack against Iran on Saturday, according to TPS. Citizens were advised to seek shelter after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said sirens sounded across the country as a precautionary alert amid the possibility of missile launches toward Israeli territory.
TPS reported that Defense Minister Israel Katz said the preemptive strikes were carried out to remove threats to the country. The Israel Defense Forces urged the public to remain close to protected spaces.
According to The Jerusalem Post, a security source confirmed to Walla that the United States was also involved in the strikes. The newspaper further reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is not in Tehran and has been moved to a “secure location,” citing an Iranian official who confirmed the information to Reuters.
The Israel Defense Forces also announced that, following a situational assessment, immediate changes would be made to the Home Front Command guidelines, shifting all areas of the country from full activity to essential activity status. The updated guidelines prohibit educational activities, public gatherings and workplace operations, except in essential sectors.
Iranian state media reported explosions in the capital, Tehran.
According to TPS, Katz declared an immediate nationwide special state of emergency under Israel’s Civil Defense Law, warning that a missile and drone attack against Israeli territory and its civilian population could occur in the immediate term.
Iranian media reported that mobile phone lines were cut in parts of eastern and western Tehran, and internet connectivity had weakened in some areas.
The developments come a day after US President Donald Trump described Iran as “very difficult” and “very dangerous” as the United States considers its next steps in nuclear negotiations, emphasizing a preference for a peaceful resolution despite ongoing military tensions in the Middle East.
The third round of negotiations between Iran and the United States took place in Geneva on Thursday, with another round of talks scheduled for Saturday.
Addressing a gathering in Texas, Trump said, “We have a big decision to make. You know that. Not easy. We have a very big decision to make. We have a country that’s been for 47 years blowing people’s legs off, arms off, and the face. They’ve been knocking out ships, killing people. Not only Americans, but lots of people.”
Trump said the United States faces a “big decision” in its talks with Iran and stressed that any agreement with Tehran must be “meaningful.” (ANI)
