New York [US], March 12 (ANI): The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s “egregious attacks” against its regional neighbors as violence continues to escalate across the Middle East.
The 15-member council passed Resolution 2817 (2026) with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions from China and the Russian Federation. The move comes as the conflict, which began on February 28, nears its two-week mark and involves nearly a dozen nations.
Under the terms of the resolution, the council condemned “in the strongest terms” Iran’s strikes against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. The text specifically denounced Iranian attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure and demanded their immediate cessation.
The resolution also called on Tehran to halt its threats, provocations, and actions aimed at interfering with maritime trade, as well as its support for proxy groups.
Bahrain’s representative welcomed the adoption of the resolution, stating that the message from the international community was clear and that countries were united in rejecting what he described as Iran’s unjust and hostile actions.
The representative of the United States, serving as the council’s president for March, said that Iran was “shooting in all directions,” noting that a record number of nearly 140 member states, including India, had co-sponsored the resolution.
Denmark’s representative said that at this crucial moment it was important to listen to the voices of countries in the region.
France’s representative placed significant responsibility on Tehran for the escalation, stating that Iran bears heavy responsibility for the current situation.
Meanwhile, Liberia’s representative, speaking also on behalf of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia, said their vote reflected a principled commitment to diplomacy, dialogue, de-escalation, and respect for international law.
China, which abstained from the vote, said the resolution did not fully reflect the root causes or the broader context of the conflict in a balanced manner.
Russia’s representative echoed similar concerns, describing the text as biased and one-sided and arguing that reading it without context could create the impression that Tehran had acted out of pure malice.
Following the vote, the council rejected a second draft resolution introduced by the Russian Federation. The proposal, which sought to call for de-escalation without naming specific parties, failed to pass after receiving only four votes in favor.
The United Kingdom’s representative criticized the Russian initiative, saying it was difficult to overlook what he described as the hypocrisy of Moscow presenting itself as a defender of international peace and security.
Latvia’s representative also voted against the Russian draft, describing the move as deeply cynical.
Addressing the council after the vote, Iran’s delegate described the resolution as a “manifest injustice against my country” and a “serious setback to the council’s credibility.”
Israel’s representative, however, welcomed the condemnation, stating that the message was clear that targeting civilians and cities is unacceptable and that Iran must stop. (ANI)
