UDHAMPUR, March 15 (ANI): In a coordinated wildlife rescue operation, the Department of Wildlife Protection successfully rescued an injured sambar deer from Kawa village in Udhampur district on Sunday.
The animal, weighing more than 120 kilograms, was first spotted by residents hiding in thick bushes. Locals immediately alerted authorities after noticing the injured deer.
A specialized team from the Wildlife Department rushed to the site and, after a three- to four-hour rescue effort with the assistance of villagers, managed to safely capture the distressed animal.
After receiving initial first aid at Tandey Rakh Park, the deer was transported to Manda Zoo in Jammu for further medical treatment and rehabilitation.
Narotam Sharma, in charge of the Control Room at Tandey Rakh Park, said the deer appeared to have sustained injuries following a suspected attack by a wild predator.
“Our team, along with our wildlife range officer, received information about an injured sambar deer spotted in the Kawa area. The animal weighed approximately 130 kilograms,” Sharma told ANI.
“Our local residents made a significant contribution. Without them, this rescue operation would not have been possible. They provided whatever assistance they could from their homes,” he said.
Sharma added that the rescue team also used available equipment while local residents helped with the challenging terrain.
“This was a hilly area, and it took about 20 to 30 people to lift the animal and load it into the van along with our rescue team,” he said.
“We are now heading to the Tandey Rakh rescue center. We have informed higher authorities, and the veterinary team at Manda is ready. After providing first aid, the deer will be shifted to Manda Zoo in Jammu for further treatment,” Sharma added.
He said the injured deer was difficult to handle because it was agitated due to wounds on its face.
“It appears the deer was attacked, as it has a deep wound on its cheek. Because of the injury, it was irritated and running around. However, with the cooperation of local residents, we were able to safely load it into the van,” Sharma said. (ANI)
