Tel Aviv / Tehran / Washington, March 18, 2026 (ANI):
The West Asia conflict escalated sharply over the past 24 hours after the Israel Defense Forces confirmed the killing of two of Iran’s most senior officials in a series of overnight airstrikes on Tehran, triggering retaliatory missile attacks, regional military responses, and heightened fears of a prolonged multi-front war.
Israeli authorities announced that Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the Basij paramilitary force, were killed in coordinated strikes targeting key installations in the Iranian capital. The IDF stated that both men played central roles in Iran’s internal security and military apparatus, including operations to suppress anti-government protests.
In a strongly worded statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the operation, describing Larijani as a central figure in Iran’s ruling establishment. Netanyahu asserted that Israeli forces are now conducting aerial operations deep within Iranian territory using fighter jets and unmanned aerial vehicles, with the objective of weakening the regime and creating conditions for internal change.
He further disclosed that he had held extensive discussions with Donald Trump, indicating close coordination between Israeli and American forces. Netanyahu said cooperation includes both direct and indirect military actions designed to exert pressure on Iran, adding that “there are many more surprises,” while declining to elaborate on future operations.
The developments follow the earlier killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28, after which his son Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the new Supreme Leader. Israeli officials have now issued direct warnings against Mojtaba Khamenei, with IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin stating that Israel will continue to pursue any individual posing a threat, declaring that “no one is immune” and that Israeli forces will “pursue, find, and neutralise” such targets.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reacted strongly to the killing of Larijani, calling it a “source of national awakening.” In statements carried by Iranian media, the IRGC described Larijani as a distinguished revolutionary figure and warned that his death would strengthen national resolve. The organization vowed that the deaths of its leaders would not go unanswered.
Within hours, Iran launched ballistic missile strikes targeting central Israel. According to emergency services, two civilians were killed in Ramat Gan after suffering severe shrapnel injuries. Additional impacts were reported in Bnei Brak, where at least one person was injured. Air raid sirens sounded across Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, with Israeli air defense systems intercepting multiple incoming missiles. Authorities urged residents to follow safety guidelines as rescue and recovery teams were deployed to impacted areas.
The conflict has simultaneously expanded across the wider Gulf region. The United Arab Emirates confirmed that its air defense systems intercepted ballistic missiles and drones launched from Iran, while authorities in Dubai reported loud explosions resulting from interception operations. Bahrain stated that its defense systems have intercepted over 100 missiles and hundreds of drones since the conflict began, and Kuwait also activated its air defenses to counter incoming threats. Residents across these countries were advised to remain in safe locations and follow official instructions.
The United States has intensified its military involvement in the conflict. The United States Central Command confirmed that American forces carried out strikes using multiple 5,000-pound deep penetrator munitions targeting hardened Iranian missile sites along the coastline near the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes were aimed at neutralizing anti-ship cruise missiles considered a threat to international shipping in the critical energy transit corridor. U.S. military officials stated that thousands of combat flights have been conducted since the escalation began, underscoring the scale of the ongoing operations.
Meanwhile, Israel has expanded its military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon. The IDF reported airstrikes targeting rocket launchers, operatives, and command centers in Beirut and the Beqaa Valley. Israeli officials stated that these operations are part of efforts to disrupt and prevent rocket fire into Israeli territory. The military has also warned of imminent large-scale retaliatory attacks from Hezbollah, maintaining a high state of alert along its northern borders.
The ongoing conflict, which began with the killing of Ali Khamenei, has severely impacted regional stability and global markets. Iran has effectively restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments, contributing to disruptions in energy supply and heightened economic uncertainty worldwide.
As hostilities continue to escalate, Israeli officials have indicated preparations for a prolonged military campaign, while Iran and its allies signal continued retaliation. The situation remains fluid, with mounting concerns that the conflict could further expand into a broader regional war involving multiple state and non-state actors.
