Tehran [Iran], April 8 (ANI): In a development expected to ease global tensions, Iran has accepted a US-backed peace overture, agreeing to a two-week pause in military operations and allowing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced the decision in a post on X, stating that Iran would halt its military operations provided it is not attacked.
“On behalf of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I express gratitude and appreciation for my dear brothers, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, for their tireless efforts to end the war in the region. In response to the request by the US for negotiations based on its proposal, as well as the announcement by the US president regarding acceptance of the general framework of Iran’s 10-point proposal as a basis for negotiations, I hereby declare on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council: If attacks against Iran are halted, our armed forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said.
“For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s armed forces and with due consideration of technical limitations,” he added.
The temporary pause is expected to pave the way for broader negotiations between Washington and Tehran, with the possibility of a peace summit in Islamabad.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of the “bombing and attack” campaign on Iran, declaring a double-sided ceasefire and stating that Iran’s 10-point proposal was a workable basis for negotiations.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double-sided ceasefire.”
He added that the United States had already achieved most of its military objectives and was close to reaching a long-term peace agreement with Iran.
“We received a 10-point proposal from Iran and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate,” Trump said.
He further noted that most points of contention between the two sides had been addressed and that the two-week window would allow time to finalize a comprehensive agreement.
With both sides agreeing to pause military operations, the development has raised hopes that the conflict, which began on March 28, could move toward resolution and restore stability in West Asia. (ANI)
