New Delhi, April 12 (ANI): Abdul Majid Hakeem Ilahi, the representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader in India, expressed gratitude to the Indian government and citizens for their support following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Speaking at the Iranian Cultural Centre in New Delhi during the Chehlum (40th-day memorial) of the late leader, Ilahi said the gathering marked not only a tribute to Khamenei’s life but also an opportunity to acknowledge the solidarity shown by the people of India.
“Today, on the 40th day of his martyrdom, we have gathered here not only to honor his memory but also to sincerely express our appreciation and gratitude to the Republic of India and to the noble, wise, and loyal people of India,” Ilahi said.
Reflecting on the public response, he noted that the support demonstrated a shared commitment to justice and humanitarian values.
“During these days, the great people of India have demonstrated a remarkable example of loyalty, wisdom, and commitment to justice,” he said.
He added that the strong participation in memorial events and messages of sympathy highlighted a universal connection to ethical principles. “Their presence and heartfelt expressions have shown that truth knows no boundaries and that awakened hearts stand alongside justice,” Ilahi said.
The memorial follows the death of 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28, an event that intensified tensions in West Asia.
Following his death, Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.
The developments come amid a breakdown in regional diplomacy. U.S. Vice President JD Vance departed Islamabad on Sunday after marathon talks between the United States and Iran ended in a stalemate.
Vance said no agreement was reached as Iran did not accept Washington’s “red lines,” particularly regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and its nuclear program.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran had utilized all available diplomatic efforts during the 21-hour negotiations, but progress depends on recognition of Iran’s “legitimate rights and interests.”
He also accused the United States of making “excessive demands” that hindered mediation efforts.
Baqaei added that despite recent losses, Iran remains determined to safeguard its national interests through both diplomatic and other means, as tensions in the region continue. (ANI)
