Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], April 21 (ANI): In a strong pitch ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay outlined a series of welfare promises, asserting that his government would act immediately upon coming to power.
Addressing supporters in Chennai, Vijay pledged 200 units of free electricity for households, free bus travel for women, and the introduction of special laws aimed at ensuring women’s safety and tackling drug-related issues in the state.
He also reiterated his party’s political stance, stating that the DMK is its “political enemy” while the BJP is its “policy enemy,” and said voters could “trust Vijay 100 percent.”
“We have now come to the final phase of the election. In Vikravandi, we said that our political enemy is DMK and policy enemy is BJP. We have not changed our stand even one inch. You can trust Vijay 100 percent,” he said.
Targeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Vijay alleged that several election promises had not been fulfilled. “How many promises were made earlier? Instead of fulfilling them, taxes have been increased on water, housing, and even garbage,” he said, adding that the state had been pushed into heavy debt. He also claimed that education loans had not been waived.
He further accused the DMK of misgovernance and alleged an understanding between major political parties. “There is an underground deal between the DMK and the BJP. What I said earlier has now been proven true,” he said, adding that he would uphold equality across religions and stand by minorities.
Claiming that the DMK would lose the election, Vijay said, “In this election, the DMK is definitely going to lose. There is a contest between the DMK and others, who are slaves of the BJP.”
Appealing to voters, he urged them to support the TVK’s “whistle” symbol. “I appeal to the people to save Tamil Nadu. Even if you are abroad, please come and vote for the whistle symbol,” he said.
Taking aim at political rivals, Vijay criticized AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami, accusing him of repeatedly targeting him with allegations and questioning his willingness to contest beyond his stronghold.
Calling for political change, Vijay said, “Just as we discard old things during Bhogi, let us move beyond both the DMK and AIADMK and bring in a new party that will provide fresh and good governance.”
He also encouraged voters to mobilize participation, saying, “Ask your family members to vote for the whistle symbol. If they do not go to vote, remind them and encourage them to participate.”
Dismissing opinion polls, Vijay said, “Do not believe surveys. This election will be a whistle wave and a successful one for TVK.”
Referring to the Karur incident, he rejected allegations made by the Chief Minister, stating that he had arrived on time and questioned whether he should have left without meeting supporters who had gathered.
He also alleged political targeting, questioning the relocation of certain candidates and urging voters to deliver their verdict.
Tamil Nadu is scheduled to go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, with counting set for May 4. The main contest is expected between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance, led by the AIADMK with the BJP and PMK as allies, while Vijay’s TVK is aiming to position itself as a third alternative.
