TEHRAN, Iran, May 12 (ANI) — Iran has confirmed that Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will visit India to participate in the upcoming BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The confirmation came during an interview with India Today Global on Tuesday, where Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaiel Baghaei discussed the high-level visit.
Baghaei highlighted the close cooperation between India and Iran within multilateral forums, noting that both countries are members of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
He said the two nations maintain a “good level of cooperation and coordination” within both organizations.
The spokesperson also emphasized the significance of the upcoming meetings in New Delhi, saying the gathering was important for Tehran and that Iran looked forward to holding bilateral discussions with participating foreign ministers, including India’s foreign minister.
New Delhi is scheduled to host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14 and 15 as part of India’s 2026 chairship of the bloc.
The diplomatic engagement comes amid heightened regional tensions following hostilities between the United States and Iran that began on Feb. 18.
Since then, Araghchi has remained in regular contact with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
According to the report, the two leaders have held at least four high-level discussions concerning the evolving situation in West Asia and its broader geopolitical implications.
During those exchanges, Araghchi reportedly briefed Jaishankar on developments following what Tehran described as US and Israeli strikes, warning that such actions threaten regional and global stability.
He also called for stronger coordination among BRICS members to preserve international order and reiterated Iran’s position regarding its “legitimate right of self-defense.”
The upcoming summit in New Delhi is expected to build upon diplomatic momentum generated during Araghchi’s previous visit to India in May 2025, his first official trip to the country after assuming office in August 2024.
During that visit, Araghchi co-chaired the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting alongside Jaishankar.
The May 7-8 meetings commemorated the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty and focused on expanding political, strategic, and economic cooperation between the two countries.
Araghchi also met President Droupadi Murmu during the visit. (ANI)
