Beijing [China], May 14 (ANI): US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that Chinese President Xi Jinping wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain open amid ongoing tensions in West Asia and concerns over global energy supply routes.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump said Xi had expressed willingness to assist in efforts aimed at easing tensions surrounding the strategic waterway.
“President Xi would like to see a deal made. He said, ‘If I can be of any help at all, I would like to be of help,’” Trump said.
“Anybody that buys that much oil obviously has some kind of relationship, but he’d like to see the Strait of Hormuz open,” he added.
The remarks came during Trump’s visit to Beijing, where the US president also extended an invitation to Xi Jinping and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan to visit the White House in September.
At a state banquet hosted in Beijing, Trump proposed a toast celebrating ties between the two countries.
“To the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people. It’s a very special relationship,” Trump said.
He also reflected on the historical alliance between the United States and China during World War II.
“As allies in World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt’s mentions of the brave people of China drew loud cheers in his speeches in the United States, and everybody loved what he had to say,” Trump added.
Chinese President Xi Jinping adopted a conciliatory tone during the state banquet, emphasizing cooperation and stability in bilateral relations.
In his toast, Xi described the US-China relationship as one of the most important bilateral ties in the world and warned that both nations “must make it work and never mess it up.”
“The people of China and the United States are both great peoples,” Xi said, adding that China’s “great rejuvenation” and America’s “Make America Great Again” agenda “can go hand in hand.”
Xi further stated that “both countries can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world.”
Throughout the evening, the Chinese leader repeatedly stressed that both nations benefit from “cooperation” and suffer from “confrontation.” (ANI)
