TEHRAN, May 25 (ANI) — Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has been elected as Iran’s Parliament speaker for the seventh time, according to a report by ISNA.
The semi-official, state-affiliated news outlet reported that Ghalibaf retained the position with 235 votes out of 271 cast during Monday morning’s parliamentary session.
The re-election of Iran’s top negotiator in talks with the United States comes as peace discussions continue between Tehran and Washington.
Speaking at a press briefing Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said the ongoing negotiations are currently focused on ending the war and that details related to the nuclear issue have not yet been discussed, ISNA reported.
“The focus of the negotiations is on ending the war, and at this stage, we are not discussing details of the nuclear issue,” Baqaei said, according to the semi-official Iranian news agency.
Earlier Monday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said efforts are underway to reach a peace agreement between Tehran and Washington and assured that President Donald Trump would not agree to a bad deal.
“We’re still a work in progress,” Rubio told reporters when asked about the latest developments involving Iran. “I think there is a pretty solid thing on the table in terms of their ability to open up the straits, get the straits open, and enter into a very real, significant, time-limited negotiation on the nuclear matters. And hopefully we can pull it off.”
The development comes after Trump said Sunday that any future negotiations with Tehran would differ sharply from those conducted during former President Barack Obama’s administration.
Trump also said Washington would not “rush into a deal” with Iran to resolve the crisis in West Asia, asserting that the US “blockade” on Iranian ports would remain in “full force and effect” until a formal agreement is reached, certified, and signed by both sides. (ANI)
