TEHRAN, May 25 (ANI) — Iranian media on Monday reported that a “hostile drone” was shot down by air defense systems over maritime areas near Qeshm Island, close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports from the Fars news agency, the unmanned aerial vehicle was intercepted over the Persian Gulf late Monday. Iranian forces reportedly used advanced domestically developed defense systems to destroy the drone, including the Arash-e Kamangir interceptor drone system, which was described as a newly integrated defense mechanism equipped with “hidden capabilities.”
Fars described the interception as a significant military operation.
“This operation, which was carried out using a system with hidden capabilities, is a clear and decisive message from Iran,” the news agency reported.
In a separate report, Mehr News Agency said residents on Qeshm Island reported hearing loud sounds linked to active air defense operations during the incident.
While Iranian media stated that the drone was intercepted over regional waters, officials did not identify the origin or ownership of the aircraft. Iranian authorities also did not immediately issue an official government statement regarding the incident.
Fars cited unnamed Iranian officials as warning against future incursions into Iranian-controlled airspace.
“This is our warning; no radar-evading drone shall ever again breach the skies of the Persian Gulf,” the officials said, according to the report.
Iranian state media described the operation as a demonstration of Tehran’s control over Gulf airspace and the readiness of its defense forces to respond to perceived threats. Technical details regarding the newly referenced defense system were not disclosed.
Despite the military activity in the sensitive maritime corridor, Fars reported that commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz continued under close coordination.
According to the report, vessels that had already received transit authorization were expected to complete both inbound and outbound passage through the strategic waterway by Monday night. (ANI)
