Washington, DC [US], May 26 (ANI): US President Donald Trump is set to convene a rare Cabinet meeting at the Camp David presidential retreat on Wednesday to discuss the administration’s next steps regarding high-stakes negotiations with Iran as tensions continue to escalate in West Asia.
The high-level meeting was confirmed by Fox News, with all Cabinet members expected to attend the strategic session. Outgoing Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is also expected to participate amid growing pressure on the administration to manage the increasingly complex diplomatic situation.
The gathering comes at a sensitive moment as the administration evaluates its options against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran.
The selection of Camp David is significant, as the secluded presidential retreat has historically been reserved for major national security and diplomatic discussions.
Political messaging from Washington in recent days has alternated between cautious optimism about diplomacy and warnings of potential military action.
President Trump has suggested that both sides may be approaching a possible breakthrough in negotiations aimed at securing a broader agreement with Tehran. However, Iranian officials have publicly rejected suggestions that a deal is imminent, citing unresolved disagreements between the two countries.
While US officials continue to express optimism about diplomacy and the possibility of a peaceful resolution, Washington has simultaneously maintained a posture of military readiness.
Trump has repeatedly warned that military action remains an option if negotiations fail.
Meanwhile, the US military carried out what it described as “self-defense strikes” targeting Iranian missile launch sites and boats near the Strait of Hormuz during the ongoing ceasefire, CNN reported, citing US Central Command (CENTCOM).
“U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces,” CENTCOM spokesperson Timothy Hawkins said in a statement to CNN when asked about reports of explosions near the strategic waterway.
Hawkins said the targets included missile launch sites and Iranian boats allegedly attempting to deploy mines.
“US Central Command continues to defend our forces while using restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,” Hawkins told CNN.
The latest exchange adds to a broader pattern of recurring tensions despite ongoing diplomatic engagement. US and Iranian forces have previously exchanged fire during the ceasefire period. (ANI)
