NEW DELHI, June 7 (ANI) — As the INDIA bloc prepares for a crucial meeting in New Delhi, Congress General Secretary (Organization) K.C. Venugopal on Sunday said discussions would focus on the current political climate, alleging that the central government is promoting “anti-democratic attitudes” and highlighting issues affecting students amid the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG examination.
Speaking to reporters, Venugopal said, “We are discussing the current political situation in the country. The way in which the Government of India is bulldozing anti-democratic attitudes and the issue of students. We have to discuss a lot of issues in this meeting. The INDIA alliance meeting is an important meeting.”
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced that 23 political parties will attend the meeting, which is scheduled to take place at the Constitution Club in the national capital.
Ramesh asserted that the opposition alliance remains united despite some parties choosing not to attend for what he described as their “respective reasons.” He emphasized that even those not attending have conveyed their opposition to the policies and actions of the central government.
The meeting is considered significant for the opposition alliance not only because of the challenge posed by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s growing political dominance but also because of internal differences among alliance partners.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a key constituent of the INDIA bloc, has decided not to participate in the meeting, citing what it described as a “betrayal” by the Congress in Tamil Nadu after the party chose to support the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) following the elections. (ANI)
