Tel Aviv, June 8 (ANI): The Israeli military said on Sunday that it detected and began intercepting a projectile launched from the direction of Yemen, as regional tensions continued to escalate across West Asia.
In a brief statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that “defense systems are operating to intercept the threat” after the incoming missile was identified heading toward Israeli territory. Air raid sirens and emergency alerts were activated in several areas as interception efforts were underway. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were released.
The incident comes amid a broader surge in regional hostilities involving Israel, Iran, and allied groups across the Middle East.
Escalation with Iran and regional spillover
The missile launch from Yemen occurred against the backdrop of intensified exchanges between Israel and Iran, including reported strikes and counterstrikes across multiple countries.
Iranian state media, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported explosions in several Iranian cities including Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan following Israeli strikes. According to these reports, Israel allegedly used air-launched ballistic missiles, while the IDF confirmed it had carried out attacks on military targets in western and central Iran.
The situation has further widened diplomatically and militarily, with multiple regional airspaces affected. Iran reportedly closed its western airspace following missile launches toward Israel, while Iraq announced a 72-hour closure of its airspace and Syria temporarily restricted southern airspace and suspended operations at Damascus Airport.
Israel-Gaza crossings closed amid security concerns
Separately, Israel announced the closure of crossings into Gaza following the surge in regional tensions, particularly the escalation with Iran.
The Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) said the closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing—Gaza’s main humanitarian entry point—was a “necessary security measure.” Authorities added that sufficient aid had already entered during the ceasefire period and said the move would not significantly impact the humanitarian situation.
Israel has previously implemented similar closures during earlier phases of conflict with Iran, reopening crossings after brief periods.
Iran missile launches and regional response
Iran reportedly launched missiles toward Israel earlier in the week, marking its first such attack since a ceasefire agreement in April. The IDF confirmed missile launches and said its air defense systems were activated to intercept incoming threats. No casualties or significant damage were reported.
In response to ongoing escalation, Israeli forces have also conducted strikes on Hezbollah-linked targets in Beirut’s Dahieh district after reported rocket fire from Hezbollah positions.
Diplomatic tensions involving the United States
The military developments come alongside heightened diplomatic activity involving the United States. Reports from senior officials indicate that U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to avoid immediate retaliation against Iran, arguing that negotiations with Tehran remain possible.
According to U.S. sources cited in reports, Washington believes a potential agreement with Iran is still achievable and has cautioned against actions that could derail ongoing talks. Trump, however, also indicated that military options remain available if diplomacy fails, while emphasizing economic pressure as an alternative strategy.
Despite tensions, officials described recent U.S.-Israel discussions as less confrontational than earlier exchanges, suggesting a temporary pause in escalation while diplomatic efforts continue.
Outlook
The region remains on high alert as multiple fronts—including Yemen, Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, and Iraq—continue to experience heightened military activity. Air defense alerts, airspace restrictions, and cross-border strikes indicate an increasingly interconnected conflict environment, with diplomatic negotiations ongoing but uncertain.
