May 17, 2026 – Thousands gathered on the National Mall for what was described as a “National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise, and Thanksgiving” to “rededicate our country as One Nation under God.” It was a history-making moment that was 250 years in the making as Americans gathered from all across the country to celebrate the landmark moment.
The event, part of the 250th anniversary celebration of our nation highlighted the Christian roots of America’s Founding Fathers who established the nation on Judeo-Christian principals and a belief in the God of the Bible. Americans came together to reflect on the Christian foundations of our nation’s history, to worship, to pray for the protection of religious freedom, and to celebrate how far we have come as a nation under God’s divine leading, wisdom and guidance.
The idea that America is in covenant with God is not a novel concept. Our greatness as a nation is a direct result of this covenant with the God of the Bible. While July 4th, 1776 marked America’s Declaration of Independence, just weeks earlier, May 17, 1776, proved a pivotal moment in American History when the Continental Congress formally urged colonies to observe a national day of prayer, fasting, and humility before God, calling on settlers to seek divine aid in the cause for Independence.
The original proclamation urged colonists to abstain from food and work, confess their sins before God, and pray for divine intervention to protect civil liberties and to guide leaders as the presumptive nation prepared for independence from the monarchy.
As the forging of our nation continued under exceptionally intense upheaval the Founding Fathers recognized the need for divine assistance to ensure the success of such an immense undertaking. The very verbiage of the proclamation reflected the deeply devout and prayerful mindset of congressional leadership and citizens alike in invoking the God of the Bible at a critical moment in history.
250 years later the call is still the same and the moment just as crucial to our nation. America’s response to the call to prayer, fasting, and humbling before God will determine the outcome of our pursuit to retain our freedoms as we entreat the God of our Fathers that He might look upon our nation with mercy and grace. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address wrote “that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of freedom.”
The event further described by Freedom250.org marked a celebration of God in American history. “In speech song, and storytelling, we will bear witness to the extraordinary story of how God has powerfully and wondrously shaped the United States of America – remembering the people, sacrifices, and defining moments in which God has powerfully manifested Himself in our history.” The site continued “this is more than an event—it is a once in a lifetime national moment.”
The alignment of the Trump Administration with the founding principles of this nation is demonstrated in stark contrast to recent predecessors who aimed to push Christianity and Biblical guiding principles out of our government, education system, and national identity. These predecessors aimed instead to replace these ideals, fundamental to our distinct greatness as a nation, with extremist ideology, state socialism, and Marxism.
The 250th rededication celebration was a “a historic gathering to give thanks for God’s providence, reflect on our nation’s story, and rededicate America as one Nation under God.” Estimates approximated a global audience of over 34 million who viewed the event across platforms.
The turnout on the Mall exceeded organizer estimates of 15,000 prior to the event to well over 50,000 in attendance within the event perimeter. Thousands flocked to the all-day event under blue skies and warm weather with the Washington Monument as the picturesque backdrop.
The stage, combining the lofty outdoors with a church-like setting, resembled a federal building with grand columns and huge stained glass windows depicting scenes of the nation’s Founders holding the flag, kneeling in prayer, and signing the Declaration of Independence. A giant cross was superimposed over the stained glass depictions highlighting our faith in Jesus Christ.
The ties between Christianity and American History were underscored throughout the full day of worship, prayer, music, and storytelling—featuring national faith leaders, Cabinet members, musical artists, and voices reflecting on key moments in American history and God’s hand in our nation.
The story of Elijah in I Kings 18 was referenced during the event in reminding us of the dramatic showdown in Biblical history where Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal and challenged them to prove whose God was the true God.
Our nation, it was said, is at a similar crossroads where the question that Elijah posed to the nation of Israel still rings true today – “how long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” I Kings 18:21
After repairing the altar, Elijah presented the challenge to the prophets of Baal that the God that answers by fire, let Him be God. In bold display, God answered Elijah’s request with a fire that consumed his sacrifice and the matter was settled. One could say that America’s altar was repaired at Rededicate 250, May 17, 2026, that God might prove that He is sovereign over a nation once more.
