ULAANBAATAR, June 22 — India and Mongolia reviewed progress in development projects and explored new opportunities in mining, clean energy, and agricultural processing during high-level talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh in Ulaanbaatar.
Jaishankar said the discussions reflected the warmth, strength, and promise of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
“Reviewed the progress in our cooperation in development projects, capacity building, culture, education, security and multilateral fora. Also spoke about opportunities in mining, clean energy and agri processing,” he said in a post on X.
He also highlighted India’s role as a “third neighbor” and spiritual partner, reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Mongolia.
The talks built on key areas of cooperation discussed during the visit of Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa to India in October last year.
During that visit, both sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in geology and mineral resources, aimed at promoting technological exchange and sharing expertise.
The two countries had also agreed to explore collaboration on the export of Mongolia’s key mineral resources, including coking coal and copper, to India to support industrial development and economic growth, according to a joint statement issued at the time.
India and Mongolia further agreed to consider renewing a memorandum of understanding on renewable energy cooperation to advance clean energy development and strengthen bilateral energy ties.
The joint statement also noted opportunities for cooperation in the livestock and textile sectors, with Mongolia’s wool and cashmere resources and India’s expertise in processing wool for carpets and textiles seen as complementary strengths.
The two sides agreed to enhance collaboration in raw material supply, processing, manufacturing, technology transfer, and human resource development to produce value-added wool and cashmere products for global markets.
Jaishankar arrived in Mongolia on Monday for a state visit from June 22 to 23. He was received by State Secretary Munktushig Ilkhanajav upon arrival.
The External Affairs Minister is on a four-day visit to Mongolia and the Republic of Korea. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, he will meet leadership in both countries and hold discussions with his counterparts from June 22 to 25.
