TEHRAN, June 26 (ANI) — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi held discussions on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, including a proposed 60-day traffic plan, according to Iranian media reports.
Citing Tasnim News Agency, the report said the leaders discussed arrangements related to maritime movement in the strategic waterway as regional tensions continue to escalate.
Earlier, Araghchi said he held a “productive call” with his Omani counterpart, adding that both sides discussed “future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz.”
“After recent Joint Statement in Muscat, had productive call with @badralbusaidi. We re-emphasized that Iran and Oman will conduct dialogue ‘to define future administration and maritime services in Strait of Hormuz.’ We’re determined and will do so in discussion with our neighbors,” he wrote on X.
The developments come after a ministerial meeting between the United States and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members in Manama, Bahrain, where officials stressed the importance of ensuring free and unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz under international law.
The joint statement from the US State Department said ministers rejected any tolls, fees, or attempts to assert control over the strait.
Oman, working in coordination with the International Maritime Organization, also indicated support for a shipping transit corridor aimed at maintaining free navigation without imposing transit fees.
However, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy pushed back, warning vessels to use only routes authorized by Tehran and saying any deviation could face enforcement action, according to Iranian state media.
The IRGC said that “certain authorities” had proposed new shipping routes without coordination with Iran, calling the move “unacceptable” and a “serious safety risk.”
It added that only Iran-designated corridors are permitted for passage through the strait and that vessels must maintain communication with Iranian authorities via Channel 16.
The IRGC further warned that any violation of its navigation rules would be subject to enforcement measures.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said it would be “unacceptable” if any Iran-related maritime agreement included shipping fees in the Strait of Hormuz, calling such measures a “game changer” during remarks at a NATO meeting in The Hague. (ANI)
