NEW JERSEY (US), June 26 (ANI) — Germany midfielder Leroy Sané scored the second-fastest goal in his country’s FIFA World Cup history during their Group E match against Ecuador on Thursday (local time), netting in the 1.49th minute, according to OptaJoe.
Sané’s strike came just 1 minute and 49 seconds into the match, making it the second-quickest World Cup goal ever scored by a German player, behind Ernst Lehner’s goal against Austria in 1934, which came in the opening minute.
Germany made a flying start to the match, scoring with their first shot on target. Sané finished a precise pass from Florian Wirtz, calmly slotting the ball past Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez from close range into the bottom-left corner.
Ecuador immediately appealed for a foul in the build-up, claiming Germany’s Aleksandar Pavlović had raised a high boot against Pedro Vite, with replays showing contact with the midfielder’s head. However, after a VAR review, the referee upheld the goal.
The match saw further drama as Ecuador equalised in the ninth minute through Nilson Angulo, who struck from distance with a low effort through traffic that beat Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Ecuador then completed a turnaround in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest during a corner situation, finishing from close range after a near-post flick-on to secure a shock lead. (ANI)
