Moscow [Russia], June 1 (ANI): Investigators are examining the site of a road bridge collapse that caused the derailment of a passenger train in the Bryansk region of western Russia, according to Russian state media on Sunday.
At least seven people lost their lives when the bridge on the Vygonichi-Pilshino section collapsed late Saturday, with debris falling onto a passenger train traveling underneath. The train was en route from the town of Klimov to Moscow, near the Ukrainian border, at around 10:50 pm local time on May 31. Railway authorities have attributed the accident to “illegal interference,” reported the TASS news agency.
Alexander Bogomaz, Governor of the Bryansk Region, confirmed that 44 people were hospitalized, with 22 others receiving outpatient care. An official investigation is underway, and a team is inspecting the site. Among the injured, three victims, including an infant, are reported to be in serious condition.
Passengers were evacuated from the wreckage and taken to a temporary accommodation centre at a nearby station, TASS added.
In a separate event, a bridge also collapsed in the Kursk region of Russia while a freight train was crossing, injuring one of the drivers, according to the acting governor of the region, which also borders Ukraine. It remains unclear if the two incidents are connected.
Meanwhile, Moscow has confirmed plans to send a delegation to Istanbul for talks with Ukraine scheduled for Monday.
