Tianjin [China], July 15 (ANI): External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Tianjin, China.
In a post on X, Russia’s Foreign Ministry shared, “Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of External Affairs of India @DrSJaishankar hold a meeting on the sidelines of the #SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting.”
The high-level interaction follows Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s meeting with Russian Defence Minister Andrey Belousov in Qingdao, China, during the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting in late June. That meeting addressed the supply of S-400 systems, upgrades to Su-30MKI fighter jets, and other critical military hardware procurements on expedited timelines, according to India’s Ministry of Defence.
In May, an all-party delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi visited Russia as part of India’s global outreach programme Operation Sindoor, reiterating India’s firm stance against terrorism.
During Tuesday’s SCO engagements, Jaishankar also met Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. Sharing the update on X, he wrote, “Good to catch up with FM @araghchi of Iran, this time on the sidelines of the SCO Foreign Ministers Meeting in Tianjin.”
Jaishankar is on an official visit to China for the SCO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, arriving in Beijing after concluding a trip to Singapore. This marks his first visit to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which significantly strained bilateral ties. Earlier in the day, he and other SCO foreign ministers also met Chinese President Xi Jinping.
His visit follows recent trips to China by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, both of whom attended SCO-related events in June. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also expected to visit India next month for talks with NSA Doval under the Special Representatives dialogue mechanism aimed at resolving the boundary dispute.
