Jalandhar (Punjab) [India], August 18 (ANI): A six-month-old girl was strangled to death by her maternal grandparents in Jalandhar, Punjab, police confirmed. Sarabjit Singh Rai, SPD of Jalandhar Rural, stated that the infant’s mother had left the baby at her maternal home before eloping with her third husband. Unable to manage the baby’s constant crying in her mother’s absence, the grandparents reportedly strangled the child and disposed of the body in a culvert along the highway.
Following their arrest, the accused revealed the incident to authorities, leading to the recovery of the child’s body. A murder case has been registered against the maternal grandparents, according to the police.
In a separate update, Punjab continues its extensive campaign against drug trafficking. Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s “Yudh Nashian Virudh” initiative, Punjab Police conducted raids at 301 locations across the state on Saturday, arresting 38 drug smugglers and registering 28 FIRs. Since the start of the campaign, a total of 25,909 drug smugglers have been apprehended, with recoveries including 620 grams of heroin and 1,612 intoxicant tablets or capsules.
The campaign operates under the guidance of DGP Gaurav Yadav and aims to make Punjab drug-free. A five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, monitors the progress of these anti-drug operations.
