Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 18 (ANI): Lucknow is preparing to honour Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut in 41 years to travel to space, following his successful mission to the International Space Station (ISS). City Mayor Sushma Kharakwal announced that the local administration has proposed naming the road leading to Shukla’s home and a city park after him.
“Shubhanshu Shukla has made the city and the country proud. We have moved a proposal to name the road leading to his house and a park in the city after him. On his arrival in Lucknow, all Councillors will welcome him at the airport. The city eagerly awaits him,” Kharakwal told ANI.
In Parliament, Speaker Om Birla and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh acknowledged Shukla’s achievements. Singh criticised opposition members for not recognizing India’s space accomplishments and highlighted the role of space technology in national initiatives such as Operation Sindoor.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also praised Shukla’s mission, calling it a milestone for India’s human spaceflight ambitions, particularly the Gaganyaan program.
Shukla returned to Earth on July 15 after participating in NASA’s Axiom-4 (AX-4) space mission, which launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 25. He safely splashed down off the coast of California, marking a significant milestone in India’s space journey.
