New Delhi [India], August 19 (ANI): External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will embark on a visit to Russia from Tuesday to Thursday, according to an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
During the visit, Jaishankar will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC).
The MEA said Jaishankar’s visit comes at the invitation of First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov. “Dr. S. Jaishankar will undertake an official visit to Russia on August 19–21, 2025, to co-chair the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), scheduled for August 20, 2025.”
The EAM will also address the India-Russia Business Forum meeting in Moscow. The statement added that during his visit, Jaishankar will review the bilateral agenda with Lavrov and share perspectives on regional and global issues. The visit, it noted, aims to further strengthen the longstanding India-Russia “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.”
The development comes amid strains in India’s ties with the US over New Delhi’s continued procurement of crude oil from Russia. Tensions escalated further on the trade front, with government sources confirming that a US team will not travel to India for the sixth round of bilateral trade negotiations scheduled for August 25.
The setback follows US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, raising the total levy to 50 percent, along with an unspecified penalty related to India’s continued oil imports from Russia.
Earlier, on August 13, Russia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Jaishankar and Lavrov would discuss key issues on the bilateral agenda as well as cooperation within international frameworks.
On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared his insights about his recent meeting in Alaska with US President Donald Trump regarding the Ukraine conflict. Modi reiterated that India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. He thanked Putin for the call and for sharing his perspective on the Alaska meeting. (ANI)
