Tel Aviv [Israel], August 24 (ANI): The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Sunday announced that they had carried out a humanitarian airdrop of food aid packages for residents of Gaza.
According to the IDF, the airdrop was coordinated with Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, and Indonesia, and was led by Israel’s NGO COGAT (Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories: Judea and Samaria and towards the Gaza Strip).
In a post on X, the IDF stated: “4 Countries Coordinated Humanitarian Airdrop: An airdrop of 111 food aid packages for the residents of Gaza was conducted by the IDF in coordination with Jordan, the UAE, Germany, and Indonesia, led by COGAT.”
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen. As of Sunday, Israeli strikes across the enclave have killed 34 people, including nine who were seeking aid, according to medical sources cited by Al Jazeera.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher condemned the ongoing famine in Gaza, calling it a preventable tragedy caused by “systematic obstruction” by Israel and a global failure that will “haunt us all.”
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday following the release of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, a UN-backed assessment, Fletcher confirmed that famine is already occurring in Gaza. He urged urgent steps, including a ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access, to prevent further catastrophe.
Fletcher stressed that food supplies were being blocked at borders, worsening the crisis: “It is a famine within a few hundred metres of food, in a fertile land. Please read the IPC report, cover to cover. Read it in sorrow and in anger. Not as words and numbers but as names and lives. Be in no doubt that this is irrefutable testimony. It is a famine. The Gaza famine. It is a famine we could have prevented if we had been allowed.” (ANI)
