
New Delhi [India], August 25 (ANI): Fiji has reaffirmed its support for India’s candidature for the UN Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent membership for the 2028-29 term, according to a joint statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday.
The two leaders highlighted the importance of Global South-South cooperation, with Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka appreciating India’s leadership role in the Global South.
During their talks, the leaders agreed on the need for comprehensive UN reforms, including the expansion of the UNSC in both categories of membership to better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. Fiji also reaffirmed its support for India’s bid to become a permanent member in a reformed and expanded Security Council, in addition to its support for India’s candidature as a non-permanent member for 2028-29.
On the front of South-South cooperation, India and Fiji underscored their commitment to strengthening collaboration as a necessary step in effectively addressing contemporary global challenges. They agreed to work together on issues of common concern to the Global South, including enhancing equitable representation in institutions of global governance.
Prime Minister Rabuka praised India’s initiative in organizing the Voice of Global South Summits, describing them as a crucial platform to deliberate on shared concerns, challenges, and developmental priorities of developing nations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in turn, appreciated Fiji’s active participation in the summits and thanked Rabuka for joining the Leaders’ Session.
The leaders also emphasized the importance of a free, open, secure, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region, announcing their intent to collaborate on strengthening regional maritime security and contributing to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The statement further noted that the two leaders exchanged views on regional and international developments and reiterated their shared commitment to peace, climate justice, inclusive development, and amplifying the voice of the Global South. Both expressed appreciation for the valued mutual support extended in multilateral forums.
Prime Minister Rabuka arrived in New Delhi on Sunday for his first official visit to India as Fiji’s Prime Minister. His visit, which continues until August 26, aims to deepen India-Fiji ties across multiple sectors, including strategic partnership and people-to-people exchanges.
