Washington, DC [US], August 27 (ANI): Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday criticised the H-1B visa program, calling it a “total scam” and alleging that it enables companies to replace American workers with foreign labour.
During an interview on Fox News, DeSantis claimed that firms often train American employees alongside H-1B visa holders, only to subsequently lay off the Americans and retain the foreign workers. “Some of these companies are laying off large numbers of Americans while also hiring new H-1B workers and renewing existing H-1B visas,” he said, arguing that this practice harms domestic workers.
DeSantis challenged the notion that the program attracts the “best and brightest” talent, suggesting instead that it primarily benefits a particular industry. “Most of them (H-1Bs) are from one country, India. There’s a cottage industry about how all those people make money off this system,” he remarked. He also questioned the rationale for importing foreign labour amid increasing displacement of young American workers due to artificial intelligence.
His comments come amid broader discussions in the US government on reforming immigration policies. US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick indicated that the Trump administration intends to modify the H-1B visa program and green card system. Lutnick also outlined a proposed “Gold Card” program, which would grant permanent residency to foreigners investing USD 5 million in the United States, potentially generating USD 1.25 trillion in revenue.
The H-1B program, designed to allow US employers to hire non-immigrant workers in speciality occupations, has faced criticism over the years for alleged misuse. During his first term, former President Donald Trump imposed restrictions, citing economic strain and abuse, while reaffirming in January 2025 that the country needs “competent” and “great” individuals through such programs.
DeSantis’ remarks have reignited debate over the program’s impact on American workers and the broader immigration system. (ANI)
