Tokyo [Japan], September 9 (ANI): The 13th World Sushi Cup Japan was held in Tokyo with the aim of selecting the world’s top foreign sushi chef.
After a series of global preliminary competitions and nominations, 30 foreign sushi chefs from 21 countries and regions participated in the event. From there, 15 outstanding chefs were chosen to compete in the final “Creative Sushi” round, where they showcased both their technical skills and originality.
Go Watanabe from Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said, “This is an opportunity for participating sushi chefs to experience authentic sushi preparation using Japanese rice and water. I hope that after returning to their countries, they will be able to recreate genuine Japanese sushi. I also hope that they will make greater use of Japanese rice and seafood in their cooking.”
The Creative Sushi competition placed particular emphasis on proper sushi-making techniques, while encouraging innovation and creative expression.
Throughout the history of the Sushi Cup, Japanese experts have also conducted lectures worldwide to promote correct methods of handling raw fish and preparing sushi rice.
A chef from Brazil highlighted the beauty of Japan, mentioning Mount Fuji, flowers, and the country’s diversity as inspirations. Another chef from Romania noted the influence of a Japanese master who opened the first sushi restaurant in Romania, saying he wanted to bring traditional arrangements back to Japan.
The top title this year was awarded to Airis Zapasnikas from Lithuania. Expressing his gratitude, Zapasnikas said, “Most importantly, it’s nice to meet a lot of good chefs and inspiring judges. I’m speechless. Really. Thank you so much, everyone.”
Along with the winner, all participating chefs will serve as Sushi Ambassadors in their respective countries, helping promote traditional sushi culture and increasing global demand for Japanese rice, seafood, and other sushi ingredients.
