Washington [US], September 15 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Monday said a major trade meeting in Europe between the United States and China had “gone very well,” adding that a deal may have been reached regarding TikTok.
Trump said he would speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday, noting that relations between the two countries “remain very strong.”
“The big Trade Meeting in Europe between The United States of America, and China, has gone VERY WELL! It will be concluding shortly. A deal was also reached on a ‘certain’ company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save. They will be very happy! I will be speaking to President Xi on Friday. The relationship remains a very strong one!!! President DJT,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Earlier, speaking to reporters in New Jersey before returning to Washington, Trump linked TikTok’s future to broader trade and technology talks. “I may, I may not. We’re negotiating TikTok right now. We may let it die, or we may, I don’t know. It depends, up to China. It doesn’t matter too much. I’d like to do it for the kids. They like it,” he said.
“I mean, selfishly speaking, I did very well with TikTok, and I got the youth vote. I got numbers that nobody’s ever even come close to in the Republican Party, nobody,” he added.
According to The New York Times, Trump has until September 17 to enforce or delay a law requiring TikTok to separate from its Chinese owner, ByteDance, or face a ban in the US. The President has already delayed implementing the measure three times. Congress passed the bipartisan legislation last year, citing national security concerns over the app’s Chinese ownership.
Trade tensions remain a backdrop to the TikTok talks. Trump imposed 145 per cent tariffs on Chinese imports in April, later reducing them to 30 per cent. China responded with a 10 per cent levy on American goods. Over the weekend, Beijing opened an investigation into US-made microchips, while Washington added Chinese semiconductor firms to a trade blacklist.
The negotiations are expected to address further tariff cuts and the status of China’s restrictions on rare earth minerals and magnets essential to US industries. The Trump administration has also raised concerns about China halting purchases of US agricultural products, particularly soybeans.
Analysts say Trump and Xi could meet next month at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea. Trump has also hinted at visiting China at Xi’s invitation. (ANI)
