Jakarta [Indonesia], October 6 (ANI/WAM): The death toll from the collapse of a school in Indonesia last week has risen to at least 50, as rescuers have cleared nearly all of the debris, authorities said Monday.
Concrete slabs caved in on hundreds of mostly teenage boys at the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, East Java province, trapping and killing many of them.
Using excavators, rescuers cleared approximately 80 percent of the debris late Sunday, recovering bodies and body parts of the teenage victims, the disaster mitigation agency reported in a statement.
Budi Irawan, a deputy at the disaster mitigation agency, confirmed that 50 people have died based on the bodies recovered. Rescuers were expected to complete the search by the end of Monday for 13 additional victims still believed to be trapped. (ANI/WAM)
