New Delhi [India], October 22 (ANI): The Ministry of Steel has scheduled an ‘Open House’ on October 27, 2025, to discuss issues related to steel imports, the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. The session at Udyog Bhavan will provide companies and industry associations an opportunity to present their concerns regarding steel imports.
The initiative comes amid concerns over the impact of cheap imports and dumping from global steel producers on India’s domestic steel sector. A recent article in the Reserve Bank of India’s monthly bulletin, authored by Anirban Sanyal and Sanjay Singh, highlighted that India faced significant challenges due to low-priced steel imports during 2023-24 and 2024-25. The paper analysed how cheaper imports affected domestic production and consumption, as well as the price sensitivity of steel imports.
According to the RBI bulletin, the surge in steel imports, driven by lower prices, led to substitution of domestically produced steel to meet rising demand, adversely affecting local manufacturers. The bulletin emphasised that the dumping of cheap steel poses risks to India’s domestic production, which can be mitigated through appropriate policy measures.
To address these concerns, India earlier imposed a 12 per cent safeguard duty on certain non-alloy and alloy steel flat products. The government described the measure as a timely and necessary step to protect domestic steel producers from import surges and ensure fair competition in the market. (ANI)
