Moscow [Russia], October 29 (ANI): A delegation led by Members of Parliament Rajkumar Chahar and C.N. Manjunath from the Lok Sabha, and V. Sivadasan from the Rajya Sabha, represented India at the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs in Moscow on Wednesday.
In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Russia stated, “An Indian delegation including Honourable Members of Parliament Shri Rajkumar Chahar and C.N. Manjunath from the Lok Sabha and V. Sivadasan from the Rajya Sabha participated in the meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Standing Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs held today in Moscow.”
The APA was established in 2006 during the Seventh Session of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace (AAPP), which was founded in 1999. As of 2019, the APA comprises 44 member parliaments and 14 observers. Each member parliament has a specific number of votes in the Assembly based on its population size.
The APA Charter and the Tehran Declaration outline a shared vision and framework for cooperation among Asian nations, promoting the goal of Asian integration. The AAPP was created out of the collective will of legislators and civil society in Asia to advance peace, democracy, and human rights across the region.
Formed in September 1999 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the AAPP sought to build unity toward the goal of peace and to establish a concrete framework for regional collaboration to strengthen human rights, democracy, and development. It also aimed to promote social, cultural, and environmental rights for the people of Asia.
At the first plenary session of the APA, based on Article 11 of its Charter, the Speaker of the Parliament of Iran, Haddad Adel, was elected as the first President of the Assembly for a two-year term. (ANI)
