NEW DELHI [India], December 17 (ANI): India’s energy sector has witnessed significant expansion over the past decade, with the number of petrol pumps and gas stations nearly doubling from 51,870 retail outlets in 2014 to more than 100,000 by 2025, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday.
Speaking during a meeting of the Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on diversification and energy transition, Puri highlighted the structural transformation of the sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the changes include strengthened infrastructure, diversification of energy sources, and a clear shift toward a cleaner and more sustainable future.
The minister noted that the number of LPG consumers has increased by 127 per cent over the past decade, while the city gas distribution network now spans the entire mainland of India, providing piped gas connections to households across the country.
“India today stands proud as the fourth-largest refiner globally, with natural gas pipeline length increasing to 25,429 kilometres and LNG capacity more than doubling to 52.7 MMTPA,” Puri said in a post on X. He added that these developments are critical to ensuring long-term energy security for the country.
India has also strengthened its energy security by diversifying crude oil imports, sourcing oil from 40 countries, and securing long-term gas supply agreements with 15 nations. In upstream exploration, the government has opened more than one million square kilometres for oil and gas exploration activities.
Puri said the committee appreciated the progress made in India’s energy transition strategy, including achieving 19.24 per cent ethanol blending, commissioning 170 compressed biogas plants, setting up green hydrogen projects by public sector undertakings, and the production of India’s first ISCC CORSIA-certified sustainable aviation fuel by Indian Oil Corporation.
“These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to building an energy sector that is affordable, sustainable, and self-reliant,” the minister said.
