New Delhi/Kolkata [India], December 23 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Tuesday voiced strong concern over alleged targeted attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh, saying the incidents have deeply hurt sentiments in India and sparked protests across the country.
Addressing the media in New Delhi, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the situation in Bangladesh had “worried all Indians,” alleging that Hindus were being specifically targeted. “The continuous attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh have certainly worried all Indians. The targeted attacks on the Hindu community have deeply hurt and angered Hindus within India as well, leading to peaceful protests and demonstrations across the country,” he said.
Trivedi accused the opposition INDIA bloc of remaining silent on the issue and alleged hostility towards Sanatan Dharma. He also condemned the West Bengal government and police for action taken against protests by Hindu organisations in the state. Targeting senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim, Trivedi alleged appeasement politics, claiming that remarks and policies under the TMC reflected a pattern similar to developments across the border.
Drawing a parallel between Bangladesh and West Bengal, the BJP MP alleged targeted actions against Hindus in both regions. “If Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh is carrying out targeted violence against Hindus, then the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal is carrying out targeted actions against Hindus,” he said.
Separately, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, condemned the lynching of 27-year-old Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh, calling it a “shameful act” by the Yunus government. Speaking in Kolkata, Adhikari alleged police complicity, citing viral visuals that purportedly showed Bangladesh police handing the victim over to protestors. “It is rare of the rare that police hand over anyone from a police station to protestors. The whole world and Hindus are protesting this incident,” he said.
Adhikari further alleged excessive force against protestors in Kolkata, claiming a lathi-charge by police and drawing a comparison between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bangladesh’s leadership.
Protests have been staged across India demanding action over the December 18 killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob over claims of blasphemy, with his body later set on fire. Demonstrations were also held near the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, where police detained members of the VHP and other Hindu organisations as they chanted slogans.
Amid the unrest, Bangladesh suspended consular and visa services in New Delhi and Agartala citing security concerns, and summoned India’s High Commissioner Pranay Verma. Dhaka also expressed concern over attacks on its diplomatic missions in India, summoning the Indian envoy over incidents in New Delhi and Siliguri.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage and renewed international concern over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh. (ANI)
