Washington, D.C., January 8: Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace on Wednesday urged the House Oversight Committee to issue subpoenas for immigration-related documents connected to Representative Ilhan Omar, her former spouses, and members of her family. The proposal, however, was set aside after several committee members said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the House Ethics Committee.
Mace raised the issue during a hearing on benefit fraud in Minnesota, referencing allegations that Omar may have married her brother to secure US citizenship—claims that have not been proven. Following the hearing, Mace reiterated her position on X, stating that federal marriage fraud is a serious felony punishable by prison, fines, denaturalization, and deportation. She added, “Marrying a sibling is illegal in every state. We intend to get to the bottom of it,” concluding with, “END THE FRAUD. DENATURALIZE AND DEPORT ILHAN OMAR.”
The renewed scrutiny follows earlier responses from Omar rejecting similar claims. In December 2025, she described allegations as “sick” when questioned by Fox News regarding statements by former border czar Tom Homan, who said federal authorities had begun reviewing records related to alleged immigration fraud. Omar told reporters she had no response and insisted investigators would find nothing.
Senior Republican lawmakers emphasized the potential legal consequences if the allegations were substantiated. Senator Ted Cruz told Fox News that Omar could face criminal liability under federal marriage fraud laws, which carry penalties of up to five years in prison, fines up to USD 250,000, and deportation. He also noted potential charges under Minnesota’s incest law, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and possible tax fraud charges related to joint tax filings.
Omar, born in Somalia, arrived in the United States in 1995 after her family was granted asylum and became a naturalized US citizen in 2000. Reports indicate she entered a religious marriage with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002, legally married Ahmed Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009 while maintaining her religious marriage with Hirsi, separated from Elmi in 2011, finalized the divorce in 2017, and married political consultant Tim Mynett in 2020.
