Kyiv, January 17 (ANI): Kyiv and its European Union allies are seeking firmer commitments on Ukraine from US President Donald Trump during discussions at Davos, Politico Europe reported.
Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia has been suffering losses of no fewer than 1,000 soldiers killed each day since December, asserting that the country is paying a heavy price simply to keep the war from ending.
Describing the situation as “madness,” Zelenskyy urged the United States, Europe, and international partners to unite in stopping Russia, stressing that the ongoing conflict underscores the global failure to protect itself from aggressive regimes.
“Right now, Russian losses amount to no less than 1,000 killed per day, and this has been the case since December. This is how Russia is essentially paying just to keep the war from ending. This is madness, and it can only be stopped by combined forces, the forces of Europe and the United States, the forces of all our partners,” Zelenskyy said.
The developments come in the wake of a massive Russian attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, which killed at least two people and injured several others.
Last month, Trump said peace talks between Russia and Ukraine were in their final stages and that the conflict could either end soon or continue for a long time. His remarks came as he welcomed Zelenskyy for talks at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, a meeting seen as a key moment in efforts to bring the nearly four-year conflict to an end.
“We’re in the final stages of talking. We’re going to see. Otherwise, it’s going to go on for a long time. It’ll either end, or it’s going to go on for a long time, and millions of additional people are going to be killed, and nobody wants that,” Trump said.
Addressing reporters before the closed-door discussions began, Trump said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin was serious about pursuing peace.
Prior to meeting Zelenskyy, Trump held a one-hour-and-15-minute phone conversation with Putin, which he later described as “very productive.” He said both leaders wanted to reach an agreement and emphasized that too many lives had already been lost.
Trump added that the outlines of a potential agreement were already taking shape and said such a deal would benefit all sides involved. He expressed confidence that progress could be made, calling the Ukraine conflict the most difficult of the wars he has sought to resolve.
On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, triggering the largest and deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. The invasion marked a major escalation of hostilities that began in 2014. The United States and several other countries have since imposed sanctions on Russia for waging war against Ukraine.
