Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], January 17 (ANI): Sergio Gor, US Ambassador to India, paid tribute at the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai on Saturday, remembering the victims of the 2008 terror attacks and honouring the courage of Indian security forces.
In a post on X, Gor said, “May such a tragedy never happen again. I visited the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel remembering the 166 innocent lives lost, including six Americans. I honor the valor of the Indian security forces and am proud that under President Trump, the United States extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face justice for his role in planning these horrific attacks.”
Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, was extradited from the United States in April 2025. He remains in judicial custody following interrogation by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the Mumbai attacks. The 26/11 attacks, orchestrated by Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed over 160 lives and injured hundreds. Ten terrorists entered Mumbai by sea on November 26, 2008, targeting locations including the Taj and Oberoi Hotels, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Nariman House, Cama Hospital, Metro Cinema, and Leopold Cafe. Nine terrorists were killed, while Ajmal Kasab was captured, later tried, sentenced to death, and executed in 2012.
During his visit, Ambassador Gor also met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, and visited the Gateway of India. His Mumbai trip follows his presentation of credentials to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 14.
Gor’s tribute underlined the ongoing US-India cooperation in counterterrorism and law enforcement, highlighting the extradition of Rana as a significant step toward justice for the 26/11 attacks.
