Washington, DC, January 20 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Tuesday shared a post on his Truth Social platform featuring an image of the US flag depicting Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela as part of the United States.
In the post, Trump is shown seated inside the Oval Office alongside several European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
In another post, Trump is seen flanked by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio while hoisting a US flag in Greenland. A nearby milepost in the image reads, “Greenland US Territory Est. 2026.”
Following the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump said the United States would oversee the South American country “until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.” Later, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated the administration’s stance on January 8, saying the Trump administration was in close contact with interim authorities in Venezuela and held “maximum leverage” over ongoing decisions.
Trump has previously suggested that Canada should become the 51st US state. After winning the elections, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly rejected the idea during his first press conference in May, saying, “It’s important to distinguish wants from reality.” Carney emphasized that his electoral victory reflected Canadians’ clear desire for independence and stated that Canada would never be part of the United States. Trump has repeatedly repeated the claim in the past and had mocked former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by referring to him as the “Governor of Canada.”
On Tuesday, Trump also held a telephone conversation with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte regarding Greenland and said he would meet several parties in Davos. He reiterated his position on Greenland, calling it integral to both American and global security.
The posts come as the United States is set to deploy a North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) aircraft to the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland amid rising tensions over Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring the semi-autonomous Danish territory. NORAD said the aircraft would arrive to support long-planned activities and that the deployment was being carried out in coordination with Denmark and Greenland.
Previously, Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Denmark and other European countries, including the UK, unless they agreed to sell Greenland. In his post, Trump claimed the move was necessary for national security, citing growing interest from China and Russia in the territory. He offered to negotiate with European nations but warned of escalating tariffs of 10 percent from February 1, 2026, and 25 percent from June 1, 2026, if no agreement was reached, stating it was “time for Denmark to give back” after years of US support.
