AIIMS Delhi performs over 1,000 robotic surgeries in 13 months

Published: January 21, 2026 | Updated: January 21, 2026 2 minutes read

New Delhi, Jan 22: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has marked a major milestone in advanced medical care by performing more than 1,000 robotic surgeries in just 13 months, hospital authorities said on Wednesday.

According to an official release, the achievement follows the installation of a state-of-the-art surgical robot in the Department of Surgical Disciplines, underscoring AIIMS’ commitment to delivering cutting-edge, minimally invasive care within India’s public healthcare system.

Robotic surgery was introduced at AIIMS over a year ago to address complex and high-risk surgical procedures requiring exceptional precision. Since then, the technology has been used extensively for gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, oncological, endocrine, and transplant surgeries.

Procedures performed include pancreatic duodenectomy, gastrectomy, esophagectomy, colectomy, anterior resection for gastrointestinal malignancies, complex abdominal wall reconstructions for hernias, kidney transplantation, and minimally invasive resections of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas for endocrine tumors.

Hospital officials highlighted that robotic surgery offers several patient benefits, including reduced blood loss, minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times. The robotic system provides surgeons with a magnified three-dimensional view of the surgical field and enhanced dexterity through precision-controlled robotic arms.

Traditionally challenging procedures such as complex colorectal, pancreatic, and esophageal surgeries can now be performed with fewer complications and improved outcomes, the institute noted.

The introduction of robotic surgery in AIIMS’ General Surgery Department represents a strategic step toward elevating the quality of care in India’s public hospitals. Beyond patient care, the initiative also aims to create a strong training platform for future surgeons, equipping them with expertise in advanced surgical technologies.

AIIMS said the success of the program is expected to encourage the adoption of robotic surgery in other government hospitals across the country, helping democratize access to advanced medical technology and set new benchmarks for public healthcare in India.(ANI)
