New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has officially launched a formal investigation into the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad, according to a statement issued Thursday by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. A multidisciplinary team from the AAIB began its inquiry on June 12, following orders from the Director General of the AAIB.
As per International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) protocols, teams from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the aircraft’s Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) have arrived to assist with the investigation.
The Ministry confirmed that the combined unit of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) was recovered from the crash site on June 13, 2025. A second set of black boxes, which this aircraft model is equipped with, was recovered on June 16. The investigation has advanced steadily with the support of local authorities and agencies. Key recovery operations, including site documentation and evidence collection, have been completed, and further analysis is underway.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to transparency, assuring that the investigation will follow all mandated protocols and uphold the highest standards of passenger safety and operational integrity.
Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia emphasized the importance of unity and responsiveness among aviation stakeholders to restore passenger trust and ensure stability within the sector, which he described as the cornerstone of Indian aviation.
Reports in some media outlets have suggested that the CVR/DFDR from the ill-fated AI171 flight may be sent abroad for analysis. However, the AAIB clarified that the decision on where to decode the flight recorders will be made only after a thorough assessment of all relevant technical, safety, and security factors.
The Ministry urged all parties to refrain from speculation on such a sensitive matter and to allow the investigation to proceed with the professionalism and seriousness it demands.
The tragic crash occurred on June 12, when Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft struck the hostel complex of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad’s Meghani Nagar area. The accident claimed 241 of the 242 lives onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. (ANI)
