Thimphu [Bhutan], January 4: Adani Group has officially commenced the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydro Electricity Project in Bhutan, first announced in September 2025. The foundation stone was laid in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
Under the project’s ownership structure, Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) will hold a 51 per cent stake, while Adani Group will hold 49 per cent. This initiative follows separate landmark Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed in May 2025 between Adani Group and DGPC to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan.
Gautam Adani, in a post on X, described the project as a “significant step” in the India-Bhutan energy partnership, emphasizing sustainability, trust, and long-term value. The Wangchhu project will require an investment of approximately Rs 60 billion for the renewable energy plant and associated infrastructure, with completion expected within five years of groundbreaking.
The Wangchhu project marks the first hydroelectric venture under the 5,000 MW MoU between Adani Group and DGPC. Gautam Adani also highlighted his role as a founding member of the Gelephu Mindfulness City, calling it “a visionary initiative of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck reflecting Bhutan’s enduring commitment to mindful and sustainable development.” (ANI)
