New Delhi [India], October 1 (ANI): The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 190 million loan to support the Indore Metro Rail Project — a transformative urban transport initiative aimed at improving mobility, reducing pollution, and fostering inclusive growth in Madhya Pradesh, according to a press release.
The project will fund the construction of an 8.62-kilometre underground metro line with seven stations, linking congested areas of Indore to the airport. The metro will feature modern accessibility infrastructure for the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities, including ramps, lifts, CCTV surveillance, and emergency response systems.
ADB Country Director for India, Mio Oka, said, “Indore’s rapid urbanisation has led to congestion, pollution, and limited mobility for vulnerable populations. This project will not only modernise public transport but also empower women and marginalised communities through targeted employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.”
The metro line is projected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 12,414 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent annually, improving air quality in one of India’s fastest-growing cities. The project will integrate with existing bus and feeder services, enhancing access to educational institutions, markets, and key transport hubs.
Commercial spaces at select stations will be allocated to women entrepreneurs and self-help groups, with safety audits and ridership data guiding improvements. A multimodal integration study will also be undertaken to optimise connectivity between metro, airport, railway, and bus systems.
ADB’s support includes planning initiatives prioritising women and girls, such as internship and training programs to build capacity in the transport sector. The bank will also collaborate with transit-oriented development (TOD) initiatives to strengthen Indore’s TOD planning and policy framework.
The project will be implemented by the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), with operations expected to begin by January 2030.
This loan represents a significant step toward modernising Indore’s public transport system while promoting sustainability, inclusivity, and economic opportunities for the city’s residents.
