New Delhi [India], July 26 (ANI): Air India has released ₹25 lakh in interim compensation to the families of 147 of the 229 passengers who lost their lives in the tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 on June 12, as well as to the families of 19 individuals killed at the accident site.
The airline initiated these interim payments over a month ago to help meet the immediate financial needs of the bereaved families. The ₹25 lakh amount will later be adjusted against the final compensation, which is still to be determined.
In a statement issued Saturday, Air India reaffirmed its commitment to the victims and their loved ones. “Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. We continue to mourn their loss and remain fully committed to providing support during this difficult time,” the airline stated.
Additionally, the airline confirmed that documentation for 52 more families has been verified, and interim payments will be disbursed to them progressively.
The Tata Group, which owns Air India, has also registered “The AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust” to honor the memory of the victims. The Trust has pledged an ex-gratia payment of ₹1 crore for each deceased individual.
Beyond financial assistance to families, the Trust will fund the rebuilding of the B.J. Medical College Hostel infrastructure, which was damaged in the crash. It will also extend support to first responders, medical and disaster relief personnel, social workers, and government staff who provided critical services in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The Trust’s mandate includes aiding in the alleviation of trauma and distress experienced by those involved in rescue and recovery operations, reflecting a broader commitment to both victims’ families and the wider community impacted by the accident. (ANI)
