New Delhi [India], March 30 (ANI): India’s aluminium production increased by 0.9%, reaching 38.36 lakh tonnes (LT) during April-February of FY 2024-25, according to provisional data released by the Ministry of Mines.
Last year, during the same period, aluminium production stood at 38.00 LT, as per government data.
Meanwhile, refined copper production saw a 7.1% growth, reaching 4.97 LT in FY 2024-25, the ministry revealed.
India’s Global Position in Metal Production
- Aluminium: 2nd largest producer in the world
- Iron Ore: 4th largest producer globally
- Refined Copper: Ranked among the top 10 producers
Challenges and Trade Measures
Advanced economies consider aluminium a strategic resource, implementing protective measures:
- The US imposes a 10% tariff on aluminium imports.
- China enforces 25% duties on aluminium scrap imports from the US, along with other restrictions.
However, India remains the world’s largest importer of aluminium scrap, affecting domestic industry growth.
With aluminium demand projected to reach 10 million tonnes by 2030, the Aluminium Association of India (AAI) has urged the government to introduce higher import duties and anti-dumping protections.
Iron Ore and Other Mineral Production Trends
- Iron Ore:
- Accounts for 70% of total MCDR mineral production by value
- Grew by 4.4% from 252 MMT (FY 2023-24) to 263 MMT (FY 2024-25)
- Manganese Ore: +12.8%, reaching 3.4 MMT
- Bauxite: +3.6%, reaching 22.7 MMT
- Lead Concentrate: +3.5%, reaching 352 thousand tonnes (THT)
