Dibrugarh (Assam) [India], June 1 (ANI): The Brahmaputra River continued to overflow in Dibrugarh district on Sunday, flooding low-lying areas following persistent heavy rainfall across Assam and neighboring regions. Rising water levels submerged homes and fields in vulnerable areas of the district, exacerbating the region’s first major flood spell of the year.
Meanwhile, in Guwahati, several areas experienced severe waterlogging after continuous rainfall lashed the city, paralyzing daily life and disrupting local transport and infrastructure.
As previously reported, eight people have died in the past 24 hours due to flood-related incidents and landslides in Assam. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three people lost their lives to flooding and five more perished in landslides. “Two people, including a child, died due to the flood in Golaghat district, while one person drowned in floodwaters in Lakhimpur district,” ASDMA said on Saturday. Additionally, five people died and two others sustained injuries due to landslides in the Kamrup (Metro) district.
The ASDMA report highlighted that 175 villages under 20 revenue circles across 12 districts—including Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Darrang, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Biswanath, Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong West—have been affected by the first wave of floods.
According to the latest figures, 58,091 people have been impacted across these districts, with 791.32 hectares of cropland submerged. Close to 7,000 displaced individuals are currently taking refuge in 16 relief camps and distribution centers set up by the district administration.
The floods have also taken a toll on livestock, with 194 animals washed away and over 75,918 others affected across the flood-hit areas.
Multiple agencies, including the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local authorities, are actively involved in rescue and relief operations.
Infrastructural damages have also been reported, including the destruction of 22 roads, one bridge, the breaching of three embankments, and damage to four additional embankments. Other affected structures include irrigation canals, school buildings, and Anganwadi centers.
Urban flooding has impacted an additional 9,865 people in areas including Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Cachar, and Kamrup (Metro) districts. (ANI)
