Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 1 (ANI): Eight people lost their lives in the past 24 hours due to flash floods and landslides triggered by relentless rainfall across Assam, officials reported on Saturday.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three people died in flooding incidents while five were killed in landslides. “Two people, including a child, died due to the flood in Golaghat district, while one person drowned in floodwaters in Lakhimpur district,” the ASDMA stated.
In Kamrup (Metro) district, five individuals died and two others sustained injuries due to landslides.
The ongoing heavy rainfall in Assam and neighboring states has led to the first spell of severe flooding this season, affecting 175 villages in 20 revenue circles across 12 districts, including Dhemaji, South Salmara, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Darrang, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Biswanath, Tinsukia, and Karbi Anglong West.
ASDMA’s flood report revealed that 58,091 people have been impacted by the flooding, with 791.32 hectares of cropland submerged. Nearly 7,000 displaced individuals are currently taking shelter in 16 relief camps and distribution centers established by district authorities.
The floods have caused significant livestock losses as well, with 194 animals reported washed away and over 75,918 animals affected across the state.
Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, and local administrative teams in the worst-hit areas.
The floods have also inflicted severe damage to infrastructure, with 22 roads and one bridge washed away, and embankments, irrigation canals, school buildings, and Anganwadi centers also suffering structural damage. Three embankments were breached, and four others were damaged.
Additionally, 9,865 people in urban areas have been affected by urban flooding in Kamrup, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Cachar, and Kamrup (Metro) districts.
Assam Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah conducted an on-site inspection of several flood-affected zones in Guwahati on Saturday to assess the situation and review the government’s emergency response efforts.
During his visit, the minister surveyed several critical locations, including Juripar, Basistha Chariali to Balughat along the National Highway, the area near Excel Care Hospital, Pandu Temple Ghat, Kamakhya Foothills, B Baruah Road, GS Road, the area behind the AGP Office in Ambari, Pibco Point, Rukminigaon, and Rukmininagar.
Speaking to the media, Minister Baruah explained that many of the flood-prone areas function as basins, collecting runoff from the surrounding hilly terrain. He noted that two major drainage projects are currently under construction to divert stormwater and mitigate future flooding. (ANI)
